BLACK ICE AND LANE REDUCTIONS: STAY HOME AND STAY SAFE
Lafayette, LA – As the declared state of emergency continues, Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) understands that many residents are feeling restless. Yes, the sun is out, and while it brings a welcome break from the cold, it hasn’t melted all the ice. Road conditions remain hazardous, with substantial ice still present on bridges and other critical areas. Public Works crews are actively working with nearly 30 pieces of equipment to clear thoroughfares and protect critical paths for emergency vehicles. However, travel remains dangerous, and it is critical that residents stay home unless absolutely necessary.
For those who must leave their homes for essential purposes, please adhere to the following safety guidelines:
- Be cautious of black ice on roadways, especially bridges and shaded areas.
- Reduce your speed, keeping speeds between 15-20mph on major roadways and drive cautiously in icy conditions.
- Limit travel to peak daylight hours to maximize visibility and safety
- Expect lane reductions, especially on major bridges to slow traffic and enhance safety.
- Avoid distractions while driving. Keep your focus on the road to respond quickly to changing conditions.
“Your cooperation is critical,” said Lafayette Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet. “Our Public Works crews are working around the clock to clear roads, but conditions are still dangerous, and with freezing temperatures expected tonight, the roads will likely ice over again. Staying home not only keeps you and your loved ones safe but also helps protect our community and gives first responders and emergency crews the space they need to do their jobs.”
LCG appreciates residents’ continued patience and vigilance. For the latest updates on road closures, visit lafayettela.gov/roadclosures.
Stay safe, Lafayette! Together, we will weather this storm.
