MAYOR-PRESIDENT MONIQUE B. BOULET ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH LCG, CSRS AND BASIN ARTS FOR THE UNIVERSITY CORRIDOR PUBLIC ART INITIATIVE

Lafayette, LA – Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet announces a partnership with Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG), CSRS, and Basin Arts for the University Corridor Public Art Initiative. This much-anticipated initiative will include significant public outreach to develop public art installations at key locations along the corridor, establishing a distinctive identity for the area while fostering community engagement throughout the multi-year project.

"University Avenue is a major gateway to our community. As we rebuild University Avenue, we want this gateway to showcase our values and tell our story. It houses Lafayette City Hall, the Lafayette Police Department, and the Lafayette Regional Airport. It also houses the University of Louisiana, the new Truman Early Childhood Education Center and Lafayette Middle” said Mayor-President Boulet. “This project is about telling the story of what we value and who we are. I have asked the team to use Public Service and Education as the underlying themes of the creative process. We look forward to public feedback and participation in the process as this is an opportunity to tell our story as you enter our community."

Basin Arts Founder and Creative Director, Clare Cook, will play a central role in facilitating this effort, bringing her extensive training in community engagement and strong connections within the art community. Her experience includes work with the Louisiana Division of the Arts’ Percent for the Art Program, the Atchafalaya National Heritage Fund, FORECAST Public Art, and the BARE Walls program, all of which have equipped her to lead this initiative effectively. As the initiative moves forward, the emphasis on community input will be critical to shaping the branding and aesthetics of the corridor. “The public’s voice is instrumental in ensuring that this project truly represents the heart of Lafayette,” said Cook.

To kick off these efforts, a public meeting will be held Wednesday, November 6, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Atrium at City Hall to discuss the overall branding and potential aesthetics of the corridor before progressing to the implementation of the art displays.
