Celebrating America250 in Lafayette Parish: Honoring 250 Years of American History 

In 2026,the United States will commemorate its 250th anniversary, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The national America250 initiative is a nationwide commemoration recognizing the people, places, and events that have shaped our country’s history and future.

In Lafayette Parish, we are proud to participate in this historic milestone by highlighting our local heritage, honoring community leaders and cultural traditions, and sharing the stories that connect our parish to the broader American experience. Through events, educational programming, and community engagement, Lafayette Parish’s America250 celebration will reflect on our shared past while inspiring civic pride for generations to come.

 

America250 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence (1776-2026). The initiative is led nationally by the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commssion, and Louisiana has established its own America250 commission as well.

Communities are encouraged to:

  • Explore history from multiple perspectives
  • Highlight local stories and voices
  • Promote civic engagement and education
  • Look ahead to the future we want to build

Lafayette Parish’s history is shaped by culture, service, innovation, and resilience. America250 offers a moment to celebrate our local heritage and traditions, honor those who have served our community and country, share stories often overlooked, and engage young people in civic life.

America250 is not just about the past but rather a chance to reflect, connect, and imagine what comes next for Lafayette Parish!

America250 in Lafayette Parish is a community-driven effort. While planning is still underway and not all programs or events have bene finalized, residents, organizations, and partners are encouraged to think creatively about how they might participate or contribute.

Ways to get involved may include:

  • Sharing local history, stories, or perspectives
  • Hosting or supporting educational, cultural or civic programs
  • Creating art, exhibits, performances or storytelling projects
  • Honoring veterans, public servants, or community leaders
  • Engaging youth through schools, clubs, or service projects

LCG raises America250 flag and launches a yearlong commemoration of this nation's 250th anniversary.

Residents, students, families, nonprofit organizations, businesses, schools, civic groups, and faith-based institutions are all encouraged to participate. Whether you contribute through volunteer service, educational programming, historical storytelling, or community events, every act that celebrates our shared heritage and strengthens civic pride is welcome.

No. While Lafayette Parish and/or LCG may host official America250 events and initiatives, individuals and organizations are encouraged to create their own acts of pride and service. Activities do not need to be organized by the city to count toward the celebration. We simply ask that participants align their efforts with the spirit of America250—honoring our nation’s history, celebrating local contributions, and investing in our community’s future.

America250 activities may take place throughout 2026, but we welcome you to accept our challenge for participation before July 4, America’s official birthday. While specific programs or recognition opportunities may have individual deadlines, the overall initiative encourages participation throughout the anniversary year. Participants are encouraged to submit their acts as they are completed to ensure they are counted and recognized.

Yes. Community organizations, nonprofits, businesses, and institutions are encouraged to host events that align with the goals of America250 as this initiative is both a local, statewide, and national effort. Events that promote civic engagement, celebrate local history, recognize community leaders, or encourage acts of service may qualify for official America250 designation, pending review and approval to ensure brand and mission alignment.

Community acts of pride and service will be shared and tracked using the official hashtag #America250LFT to help showcase the positive work happening across Lafayette Parish and highlight the many ways residents, organizations, and businesses are contributing to the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.

Yes. Lafayette Parish will provide a digital toolkit and promotional materials to help individuals and organizations participate in America250. Toolkit coming soon!
