FAMILY ADOPTS FUREVER FRIENDS DURING FREE ADOPTION EVENT
Free adoptions at Lafayette Animal Shelter and Care Center through May 15
Lafayette, LA – The Huval family recently found their new best friends at the Lafayette Animal Shelter and Care Center (LASCC). They had been considering adopting a dog after Nora, their family dog of five years, recently passed away from a tumor on her back.
They intended to leave the shelter with one dog but instead brought home two — Susie and Sally — that were transferred to LASCC from an overcrowded shelter where they were a bonded pair and housed together. “We felt lonely without our dog, and our kids wanted to rescue a dog. We didn’t want to separate the pair,” Isaac Huval said, adding LASCC’s free adoption event helped. “That was hard to pass up.”
Susie and Sally are two of 46 dogs and one cat adopted from LASCC since adoption fees were waived beginning on May 1 for the “Empty the Shelters” event that has drawn people from seven nearby parishes and one as far as Tensas Parish.
A self-proclaimed dog family, Huval encourages people considering adopting a pet to take advantage of free adoptions. In a few short days, his family has witnessed Susie and Sally’s personalities blossom from timid shelter dogs to family pets who feel right at home. “At home they constantly play with each other. They’ve adjusted very well, very, very well,” he said.
Pet adoption fees are waived through Monday, May 15. “Empty the Shelters” is a partnership between LASCC, the BISSELL Pet Foundation and Dogtopia. The foundation will reimburse $50 for every dog adopted and $25 for every cat.
All animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and dogs are treated with heartworm preventative.
