Cart Inspections, Educational Stickers Aim to Improve Recycling in Lafayette

Lafayette, LA - Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG) and The Recycling Partnership’s “Feet on the Street” recycling campaign will begin Monday, January 11. The campaign, which aims to educate residents on the importance of recycling correctly, will affect Republic Services customers in the city of Lafayette.

The eight-week campaign begins on Monday with inspectors checking recycling carts at the curb on collection days. Staff will look for incorrect or dirty items inside carts and may leave an “Oops Tag” when mistakes are made. The tag will identify items that should not be in the cart and should be removed. If incorrect items remain, carts may not get collected. Informational stickers explaining acceptable and unacceptable items have been placed on the inside lids of carts as a quick guide to recycling right.

LCG Environmental Quality Manager Bess Foret said, “With LCG and residents working together, we can make a positive impact on recycling right in Lafayette. Sometimes, people just need help knowing what should and should not be placed in recycling carts.” Incorrect or dirty items placed in recycling carts contaminate whole truckloads, causing them to all be taken to a landfill instead of being recycled into new products.

LCG is working hard to ensure curbside recycling will be the best that it can be, and with residents’ help, a clean recycling stream can save taxpayers money, reduce the number of new resources expended in creating packaging products, and improve the health of the community.

Recycling the Right Way

  • Place ONLY flattened cardboard, paper, metal cans, and plastic bottles and jugs in your bin.
  • Items should be free of food residue.
  • Clean – rinse cans, plastic bottles, and jugs, shake off the water.
  • Dry – Items should be dry before placing them inside a recycling cart.
  • Do not bag recycling, only place loose items in a recycling cart.
  • When in doubt, throw it out.
